Gold Mountain Express is a work of fiction in the drama, wartime, and historical fiction sub-genres, and was penned by author Gene Lassers. Set between contemporary times and the latter half of the Second World War, the story revolves around a fascinating piece of true history in which the Third Reich hid away much of its most valuable stolen treasures. As the Polish government becomes convinced by an opportunistic band of diggers that tunnels within their mountain may contain such riches, so begins a harrowing tale of stolen goods, suffering, and survival against some pretty impossible odds.
Author Gene Lassers has crafted a masterfully-told story that takes the pages of history and weaves a strand of fiction amongst them which is so emotionally resonant that it feels like fact. One of the things I particularly liked about this work was its attention to detail, especially around lesser-reported parts of the war, such as the ghettos in Poland, and the severe contrast between the rich and greedy and the oppressed masses. I thought the dialogue was also a strong point of the work, serving not only to characterize the many resonant figures which appear within the work but also moving the plot forward with unique phrasing that really makes you feel like you’re right there in the middle of it all. For its dedication to authenticity and devoted character work, overall I would certainly recommend Gold Mountain Express to fans of truthfully told historical fiction and Second World War survival stories.
