"Global TESOL: Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages: An Orientation Guide," written by Sarah Anne Shope, MAPW, MS EdTESOL, PhD, is a comprehensive guide for those teaching English to individuals who speak another language. This book is divided into nine units. The first few units focus on language learning in general. Then different techniques and tools are shared including stressing the importance of repetitions, per-testing, and tips as to what does not work the best. There are also units about creating lesson plans, breaking down barriers of different kinds including cultural and emotional differences. There are also sections on helping you as the teacher including building a resume, being flexible and becoming involved in the field.
The author's passion for this subject is apparent throughout the book. As communities are becoming more and more culturally diverse, there is a great need for teachers who are able to teach English to individuals speaking other languages and needing to learn English. I loved the section that focuses on interactive lesson plans. There are so many good points included as well as sample lessons. This section also discusses having survival kits and gives ideas as to what should be included such as clocks, maps, calendars, timelines and pictures of people. This really made me stop and think about how I learned things and how I still learn. There are excellent ideas and tips included throughout this book. I find this book to be top-notch as it covers everything a teacher would need from a broad overview of a field, to growing professionally, to creating lesson plans and implementing them.
