Glimmer by Denise Keiser follows the story of Celeste, a teenager whose life has always been shrouded in mystery from the day she was found by her parents. Seemingly a magnet for the weird and inexplicable, she finds herself drugged and whisked away to Aves, the island of Avians. What are Avians? Oh, just a bunch of handsome winged men who intend to keep her as a pet. Unable to escape, Celeste must endure the horrid treatment by the Avian's leader, Rockford, while fighting her ever-growing attraction to Jacob.
Glimmer by Denise Keiser is an intriguing and imaginative story. Starting with Celeste’s background, it becomes clear from the get-go that strange things are bound to happen. I quickly found myself immersed, especially with the colorful array of winged men that were presented. The concept of how they materialize their wings and shift through matter is especially intriguing as it adds a scientific aspect to this fantasy world. Keiser does a wonderful job with the world-building, with vivid descriptions of the island and the characters, making it easy to picture every scene. The best part of it all is the romance between Celeste and Jacob. Even though the two haven’t known each other for a significant amount of time, their interactions and shared experiences made up for it. I’ve always considered myself a hopeless romantic, which is why this book was right up my alley, and I look forward to reading more of this series.
