Ghosts of Sherwood by T.S. Maynard and W.J. McNally is a delightful, tongue-in-cheek story with fantasy and reality mixed in a creative and entertaining way. Mysteriously transported into a world of their childhood heroes of Robin Hood, King Arthur, Achilles, and others, Alex Van Owen and his son Sean have to find their way home somehow. But the story goes way beyond their adventures; it is a hilarious commentary on romantic childhood dreams betrayed by misplaced adult ambitions of pursuing business success and the money that goes with it. Thrown into this familiar yet disturbingly corrupted environment, Alex can’t help but realize the mistakes he had made in his life, risking the loss of what he valued most: his son and his estranged wife.
I enjoyed reading this short but powerful novella very much. The narrative flows smoothly with unexpected twists and turns that kept my interest high. The delightful humor made me laugh out loud many times, and the juxtaposition of conflicting imagery in King Arthur’s Camelot was well portrayed. Beyond the entertainment value, Ghosts of Sherwood by T.S. Maynard and W.J. McNally had a vital social and philosophical message to the reader: don’t betray your values for ultimately empty goals of self-promotion and success. It is an easy read with a well-developed vocabulary, dialogs, descriptions, and vivid imagery. I finished it in one day, and I can highly recommend it to anyone interested in an intriguing tale laced with humor and wisdom.
