General Houston's Little Spy: A Texas Revolution Story is a young adult historical fiction novel written by Cara Skinner. Samantha Russell was born in 1819. Her parents had a large family and Samantha was the middle child. They had a good life working the family farm on the banks of the Nolichucky River in Eastern Tennessee. When Samantha wasn't doing chores or going to school, she was out having fun with her best friend, Danny Autry, who was two years older than she. They'd hunt and explore the woods, and figure out ways to avoid the long church services on Sunday. As they grew up, their relationship became more than friendly, and their parents realized the two would get married and start a life together. Danny had heard about the opportunities for people who wanted their own land in Texas, and he was determined to move there. Both his and Sam's parents opposed the move, but the two left at night and arrived some days later in Texas.

Cara Skinner's young adult historical novel, General Houston's Little Spy: A Texas Revolution Story, is a poignant and well-researched coming of age story about a young woman whose life is forever changed by the battle of the Alamo. Skinner's heroine learns to do the things that a young girl at that time and place is expected to do, but she retains the option of determining for herself the correct course of action depending upon the circumstances. I found the account of how her family's farm functioned to be a fascinating look back into agricultural history and the community spirit that bound and supported the settlers and their descendants, as seen from the perspective of a young girl. Sam's account of the battle of the Alamo is stark and unadorned and is a marvelous historical introduction to Texas history for young readers. Skinner’s list of references also supplies a number of unique and useful books and articles. General Houston's Little Spy: A Texas Revolution Story is highly recommended.

Samantha Dewitt (Rivera)

Samantha is a typical teenage girl in the 1800s. She’s determined to live the life that she wants and nothing is going to stand in her way. Traveling to Texas with the love of her life is only the beginning of the adventures that Samantha and Danny will undertake through what is to become one of the most well-known battles in the history of the United States. And when tragedy comes, remembering the Alamo is going to mean a lot more than anyone may have realized. After all, the war is definitely the worst thing Samantha has ever endured, but it’s going to change her in ways she never would imagine in General Houston’s Little Spy by Cara Skinner.

This book was one that I literally couldn’t stop reading. I sat down and read the entire thing in one sitting because I loved the way it seemed to build up. I absolutely couldn’t stop reading because I wanted to learn more about Samantha and Danny and, of course, everyone else in their lives. People like the General, Hendrick and Danielle were characters that I wanted to understand, and there was so much going on with each of them that every time I put down the book I picked it right back up again. If you love historical fiction and you really like romance, then you’re absolutely going to love this book just as much as I did. General Houston’s Little Spy by Cara Skinner is a book I will definitely hold onto and read again.

Years prior to the Civil War, young Samantha Russell fell in love with her childhood friend Danny. They hunted together, hiked the woods, and shared hours of conversation. When Danny decides that his future is in Texas, Samantha whole-heartedly supports him and plots to leave secretly under the cover of night. Leaving letters to their parents in explanation of their actions, the two young lovers embark upon the grueling journey to a mysterious land.

Good fortune appears to be with them as they acquire their dream property and set in motion the foundation of their future as man and wife. Life in the “wilderness” was wonderful and the young couple fantasized about the time when their families could join them. And then disaster struck. Mexican leader Santa Ana initiated his attack on the Alamo, engulfing the small Texan community in the ravages of war. In a time when women were not expected nor encouraged to engage in warfare, Samantha Russell Autry is forced to defend her home and her anti-slavery beliefs. As a spy for General Houston, Samantha makes her mark on American history.

Author Cara Skinner exhibits her love for Texas history in this fictional account of the Texas Revolution. General Houston’s Little Spy is a delightfully told tale of early America and the formation of one of the largest states in the country. Although a work of fiction, the author has obviously done her research. This convincing novel will delight readers interested in history as well as readers who just enjoy an adventurous read.
