Children need to learn not to give up if they want to achieve their goals. The path will not always be easy, and they could face many obstacles. If they understand what perseverance is, they will be able to succeed despite the challenges. This lesson is featured in Gen the Grit in I Quit! by Julie Anne Penn and Darren Penn. The story concerns Jordan, a boy who wants to quit soccer because he doesn't think he's good enough at it. Luckily Gen listens to him and tries to encourage him. Jordan expresses his feelings and fears. Gen explains to him that it's okay to feel nervous and that his loved ones will support him, no matter whether he wins or loses. Gen also advises him that the idea is to do your best and not give up because you become better through learning from your mistakes.
Julie Anne Penn and Darren Penn share an incredible story for young readers that will encourage them to get out of their comfort zones. The illustrations are colorful and show a variety of situations with which children can identify. Jordan describes his fears as being watched, making mistakes, or letting his friends down. These are common experiences when taking part in any team activity. The story demonstrates how to overcome these obstacles and reminds you that nobody is perfect. In this way, children will learn that mistakes should not be seen as a failure because we all fail at some time. By understanding this, it will be easier to move forward. Thanks to Gen the Grit in I Quit! children will learn to trust themselves and their abilities.
