We Baby Boomers remember the Vietnam Era. While I lived in a small rural town that was isolated from the protests, I still felt the dissatisfaction and unrest that was rampant in our country. This book allows readers to peek inside the window of the Vietnam soldier’s life before, during, and after the war.

The focus is on three young men living a life of recklessness, partying, and carousing. All of that changed when they joined the Marines. John Henry’s life was one of booze and women. The battle field changed him forever. Gunny Sergeant Abernathy became John, and his buddies, leader and friend. Abernathy was there for his men in battle and after. We watch as the characters in this story grow from boys to men.

I highly recommend this book. It is not often I take the time to read a book in one sitting, but I did this one.
