Frivlok by Eli Ingle is the second installment in the Appointments on Plum Street series, preceded by the first book, Rigel. Although it's fairly easy to read and catch up with as a standalone, Frivlok is – as most in a series are – even better served after Rigel. Frivlok, a Fallen One, is the antagonist to Rigel, a Light One, who is destined to ultimately defeat the Fallen Ones regardless of how many rebirths it takes. Rigel trains vigorously with Rona, trekking for a means to destroy Frivlok, who himself is searching to obtain the upper hand with the manipulation of a Light One and the assistance of his ever-present sidekicks, the Commander and the Shapeshifter.

Told from alternating points of view, Frivlok allows readers into the heads of both good and bad, which serves to highlight the extraordinary world building skills that Eli Ingle dishes up on each page. The dialogue feels authentic and natural, even in a setting that seems anything but. Fantasy and magic blend as the story traverses through landscapes brimming with vivid detail. “There was something darkly enchanting about the holes in the rock and the travelers found themselves staring at them as they passed by. The darkness within the holes was all-consuming – thick and unmovable even when a light was shone on it.” For me, I found Ingle's comfortable humor to be the highlight of the writing even if I have to concede that it was the non-stop tension that kept me engrossed in the story. Highly recommended.
