Have you ever wondered what the trip on the Mayflower was like? What were the hopes and fears of the people who left England in the 17th century to find freedom and happiness in America? Cissy Hunt’s historical fiction book, Freedom’s Voyage, allows you to discover the fate of one of these persons, a remarkable woman named Eleanor Billington. Eleanor was the author’s ancestor and left England with her husband and two sons, dreaming of a better future. Before this could happen, she had to face illnesses and hardships. At times, the situation was so daunting that Eleanor started to doubt her decision, but she did not lack courage.
Freedom’s Voyage is a most delightful book to read. It allows you to have a quick but precise look at the main events of one of the most memorable journeys in history. Hunt gives special attention to Eleanor’s feelings and thoughts, making her a real human being with a modern mind. I sympathize with Eleanor a lot. I admire her courage and understand her fears. She is also the one who makes it clear what the message of the book is. Freedom's Voyage is about hope. Despite so many adversities and troubles, Eleanor's faith in the future is encouraging and gives Freedom’s Voyage an optimistic perspective. It is a piece of advice we all need. Even though you already know the story of the Mayflower, Cissy Hunt’s words invite you to read it one more time – from a privileged point of view.
