Fracture is a historical romance thriller set against the backdrop of World War II Nazi Germany. Written by Elyse Hoffman, the book follows Private Franz Keidel, an SS soldier who is on a single-minded mission to capture, torture, and execute Jews on behalf of the Fatherland. But Franz's purpose hits a roadblock when he finds his old childhood friend Amos Auman hiding in old man Winkler's barn on a random search. Plagued by memories of his past with Amos, Franz is determined to protect him at all costs. A burgeoning passionate romance brings the two friends closer. However, when Winkler discovers their affair, he immediately throws Amos out. Now, Franz must find a way to rescue Amos and provide him with an escape to save his one true love and his own soul.

Fracture is an intimate love story set during World War II that showcases a young man's dilemma to choose between the love of his life and his mistaken sense of duty to his homeland. Author Elyse Hoffman tells a small-scale story about World War II that perfectly demonstrates the dehumanization of the Jewish community of that era and how young German men were brainwashed to commit mass genocide. The characters are complex people with inner conflicts and grey morals that make them relatable and thoroughly compelling to read. Franz's treatment of Amos compared to his indifference to others displays his refusal to come to terms with the fact that his superiors lied and manipulated an entire people. If you liked the hit Hollywood movie Jojo Rabbit, you'll love Fracture.
