Four Doors and Other Stories by A.G. Billig is a collection of twelve short stories that blur the lines of magical realism. Stories like girls Isabella and Mattie who meet by pure chance and have a fantastical adventure as pseudo sisters. A couple that takes a second chance at love through the visceral yearning of lust's powers. A postman whose wedding presents are the all the caps he lost while delivering ten thousand seven hundred and twenty-three letters. A dead body in a gypsy camp and the French teacher's magical doors. While these stories are all very different and unique, they all have a magical, mystical element to them that pushes the boundaries of reality. Also, the stories all encompass the theme of love, even if indirectly, through topics like solitude, jealousy, longing, and infidelity.
I liked the magical themes woven through these stories and readers will appreciate that these stories are whimsical and entertaining. However, the stories still try to portray a strong theme and a serious message. I think other readers will also appreciate the thought provoking nature of these tales and how the endings almost always made you stop and think about the characters and their motivations. I especially liked The Enchanted Sledge, which had a grown up fairy tale feel to it that readers will appreciate.
