Christmas, as we know it, is a time of laughter, warmth and cheer, but in Forgotten Christmas by Ash Gilpin, it has not always been so. Three dear friends live in a land where Christmas does not exist. In a fortunate twist, they stumble upon a shed filled with lights and decorations. Eggnog and candy canes fill the forgotten shack. They rush off to Old Mrs. Marley’s house, eager to learn of the cause behind the disappearance of Christmas. It is from her that they learn the disheartening story of Willy, a young boy determined to do anything to work in Santa’s shop. Will the three friends succeed in finding Willy and bringing back Christmas? Does Willy stand a chance of explaining himself to Santa after such a long time? So much is at stake but they have to do all they can.
Forgotten Christmas by Ash Gilpin is a wonderful classic containing varying textures in rhythm, color and tone. The story contains only a few characters but the dire need to restore Christmas is felt all the way, giving the impression that so many are cheering on the three friends. Perhaps the best aspect of the book is the clarity of the story and its conciseness. The three friends’ goal is clearly voiced and the suspense surrounding the outcome kept me going. The illustrations by Masha Klot provide an additional complementary strand to the book, creating an enticing backdrop for this enchanting story. Create beautiful memories with family while appreciating the importance of Christmas with Ash Gilpin’s Forgotten Christmas.
