Kate Lockwood hopes to mix business and pleasure when she returns to her small hometown for her sister’s wedding. Unfortunately, her business becomes personal and any enjoyment she has may be threatened by secrets lurking from the past and schemes in the present that threaten the lives of those around her. Forbidden Ground is the second novel in the Cold Creek series by Karen Harper and brings the Lockwood sisters together again in their village near the Appalachian foothills. Karen’s career as an archaeologist involves the mounds left behind by the ancient Adena civilization and she hopes to study one that lies on Grant Mason’s land. Even though Grant is the best man at the wedding and there is a growing mutual interest between them, her wish may not be fulfilled. Old childhood secrets, modern realities and hidden players keep the couple busy, never quite sure who to trust. Are they on the same side or working against one another? And are there even bigger secrets that neither one is prepared to have uncovered?
True friendship and strained family ties are important elements that dictate the course of much of the action in Forbidden Ground, the second novel in the Cold Creek series by Karen Harper. Set against the historical importance of the Adena mounds in the heart of lumber country, Forbidden Ground represents many different things to different people and deals with their hopes, dreams, desires and resentments. Harper does a wonderful job setting the characters in motion and bringing the secrets to light while she keeps the reader guessing.
