F!KTORY by Jorge Enrique Ponce is one crazy ride. At the helm of this roller coaster ride is E, a street smart fourteen-year-old, who just wants out of her messed up life with an abusive father who forced her to deal drugs when she was only a child. She can't wait to have enough cash to leave town with her baby brother, Phil, and her best friend, Ricky. Slightly desperate, she steals several vials of a new drug called Lumen, which gives users superpowers like telekinesis and flight. After a successful night of selling the drug at an exclusive party, she becomes known as “that girl,” discovers a new sense of power, and finds herself surrounded by a new group of people. But success and power aren’t all that great and things begin to spiral out of control.
F!KTORY is a fast-paced and exciting contemporary novel with an element of sci-fi and fantasy. The writing is witty and descriptive, and full of punchy lines. The story itself is intriguing and Jorge Enrique Ponce leaves enough mystery to keep you glued to the pages. The main character, E, is strong and interesting and easy to like, though at times it’s hard to imagine she’s only supposed to be fourteen. The other characters are also interesting, with some more mysterious than others, and this just adds to the roller coaster ride of a story. The book doesn't delve much into why and how this mysterious new drug has that unique effect, though the last part of the book seems to hint that more about it will be revealed in the next book. Overall, F!KTORY is a fascinating read that fans of sci-fi and fantasy, especially “superhero” stories, will enjoy.
