Fish & Sphinx is a work of fiction in the fantasy, adventure, and suspense subgenres, and is the third novel in the MiddleGate series. It is intended for middle-grade and younger YA readers and was penned by author Rae St. Clair Bridgman and narrated by Larissa Thompson for this audiobook version. Set after the events of Amber Ambrosia, we find ourselves back with cousins Wil Wychwood and Sophie Isidor as they face a new threat from the Serpent's Chain. The secret society plans to seize the Manitoba Legislative Building, also known as The Palace of the Blazing Star in MiddleGate. Assisted by Catfysh, the Spirit of the River, Wil and Sophie must unlock the Palace's hidden code and prevent its destruction.
Author Rae St. Clair Bridgman has crafted another explosion of brilliant fantasy, action, suspense, and adventure as Wil gets himself into more danger than ever before. I really enjoyed the additions to the story and the new concepts at play, delivering a suitably complex plot that affords the MG and younger YA audience the intelligence they deserve but also has plenty to offer adult readers seeking atmospheric, creative, and immersive fantasy tales. The new challenges and twists to this ongoing saga never cease to surprise me, and Wil just gets more endearing every time.
Narrator Larissa Thompson provides another signature performance in bringing the newest wonders and dangers of MiddleGate to life. I enjoy the cheeky hint of mystery in her voice and the sense that she always knows so much that we don’t yet. The characters' personalities shine through the narration, and their attitudes and energies are distinctly different and easy to follow, making it an engaging and enjoyable audiobook experience that never disappoints. Overall, I would highly recommend Fish & Sphinx to existing fans of the series so far, and the series in general to young (and young at heart) fantasy fans seeking an immersive and truly compelling series to lose themselves in.
