Finding Mummy's Glow is a children's book written by Mandy Woolf and illustrated by Elmira Georgieva. Noah adores his mother. Her smile lights up his life. Noah and his Teddy, Mr. Snuggles, love spending time with her as she makes their whole world shine. But one day, Noah's mother's shine fades and she has no energy left to play or even to smile. Each day, Noah's mother feels sicker and soon she is unable to get out of bed. Eventually, Noah's mother tells him she is sick with something called cancer. Noah wonders if he has given cancer to his mother, but she assures him she is not sick because of anything Noah has done. Noah decides to do everything in his power to help his mother find her glow again so she can get well. He wonders if it is in a rainbow, a flower, or maybe a star.
I found Mandy Woolf's tale on the difficulties a child faces when their parent battles cancer to be very realistic and relatable, having lost my father recently to the illness. Finding Mummy's Glow explains the feelings of helplessness felt by the children of any parent when the parent becomes sick. Blaming themselves for somehow letting it happen is a natural reaction, and looking for any beacon of hope becomes a difficult journey to embark on. Elmira Georgieva's illustrations beautifully capture many of these difficult feelings throughout the story. Reading about the innocence of a child who believes maybe his mother caught cancer from him made me shed quite a few tears, as it can quite literally be impossible to accept the fact that a parent is so ill and there is nothing that you can do about it. Finding Mummy's Glow is a story that every child over the age of five should read, as hard as the subject matter may be, as the possibility of their lives being touched by cancer is sadly more likely than any of us would like.
