In Finding Miss Fong, James A. Wolter narrates the love story that transpired after he traveled from Chicago to Malaya through a Peace Corps program. James left home and medical school hoping to escape marriage—his mother's wish for him. He also wished to fulfill his role as a biology teacher in Malaya. Unfortunately, the political games played by those in charge resulted in a chaotic, discouraging experience. However, as he worked toward leaving Malaya and returning home, he met Miss Fong at a picnic. While with Miss Fong, he learned that falling in love with someone from a different country and culture brings unforeseen challenges. He also discovered the kind of luxury he never had back home and found himself treasuring his cultural experience.
James' evocative descriptions of the physical environments and the people he met set the mood for a movie-like read. I enjoyed picturing his adventure-packed explorations. Additionally, the culture-rich tale reveals several intricate details about traditional Chinese practices, such as growing a beard to symbolize being a grandfather. Readers will find connecting with the protagonist a joyful, effortless experience as James' voice sounds loud and clear. His deepest emotions are communicated clearly—following his frustrating experience in a politically unfavorable setting and a rocky quest for acceptance in a foreign land. Finding Miss Fong is a must-read for anyone who has fought for love and fans of vivid historical memoirs. It drew me in with its brilliant storytelling and kept me engrossed as I hoped the couple's love would stand the test of time.
