“The weight of the stars is upon you, Allison, but we will prevail. Danger will not stop us—it will make us strong.” In Fate of the Stars by Arwen Paris, 17-year-old Allison Delaney is determined to spend her senior high school quietly, pursue a scholarship and study abroad so she can leave her painful memories behind. She had no idea that Earth would be invaded by aliens called the Ma’tiok, and that a symbiont alien named Eenoki will use her mind and body as a host to fight the invasion. As the enemy threatens to kill all of Earth’s population, Allison must make an ultimate choice if she wants to save everyone. The basis of the concept reminds me of the 2013 film The Host. As a sci-fi fan, the premise is a familiar one, but interesting nonetheless.

Even though the prose is unnecessarily ornate in some parts, it is clear and readable and the plot is sufficiently complex. I do love the back story of the aliens, particularly the Alliance, the enemies of the Ma’tiok. Plus, there are enough fight scenes that should be able to entertain action fans as Earth becomes the battleground for warring aliens. I rooted for both Allison and Eenoki as the cooperation with the Alliance wasn't easy. They care less about the humans, and the relationship between the Vongjars and the Hytans is not without difficulties. On the whole, Fate of the Stars is well-targeted for the younger group of YA readers and substantial enough to have a sequel.
