Fast Answers - Fasting Plans for Specific Prayer Needs, by Beyr Reyes is a rather unique idea in that fasting encompasses everything from resisting food to abstaining from television viewing. The first chapter of the book explains the concept and also gives warnings on when and how not to fast. The author divides the fasting reasons into categories such as when you hurt others or when you've been hurt by others. Motivational and situational factors are also relevant precursors to the need to fast. Reyes uses the MAP technique to move the person through the process in either a three-day or a seven-day fasting process. M is for the need to Meditate on God's Word. A stands for the need to answer a question related to the fast while P stands for the need to pray about the issue which has created the need to fast.
Author Reyes writes in a straight-forward manner such that most readers will be able to direct themselves through the fasting process. Fast Answers is an easy-to-follow process which will appeal to those needing direction and encouragement while they attempt to change their outlook on a negative life event. I liked the simplicity of the process but I also felt that many of the issues would take more than a three or seven day concentration in order to rethink. I also felt that looking for signs of confirmation was a bit elusive as interpretation of events is so highly subjective. However, for those who believe in the process of fasting as an effective means for cognitive, emotional, and behavioral change, this book is a great place to start and would be a frequent reference along the path to change.
