There were a lot of strange things about Flicker Island, just off of the coast of Davenport, Connecticut. The twins that have suddenly showed up at Davenport High School are acting a little bit strange, too, in Nightmare Island: False Awakening by Stella Drexler. Mia Burke wishes that she could just have an ordinary junior year in High School as she starts the year as the editor of the school newspaper. She hopes that Luke Brennan will ask her to the Homecoming dance, which her friend Lorien Montalvo swears is destined to happen. When Tegan Hathaway disappears just before the beginning of the school year, everyone assumes that she has run off with some college guy from New Haven, but when police discover her car and then her body, there is no doubt that Tegan was murdered. When Tegan’s brother Micah asks for her help to figure out what Tegan was doing, it leads to some strange questions and they seem to be pointing toward Flicker Island. Is the weird behavior of everyone she asks hiding some secret? Why do the Flicker Island twins Aylin and Ian Crane act so different from each other and so strange? Mia can’t even think about Homecoming and the paper while she has such a deep mystery to unravel.
Stella Drexler has kicked off her Island Series with a solid piece of work in Nightmare Island: False Awakening. While she expertly paints the portrait of the typical thoughts, emotions, and events of a high school junior, she also has a wonderful way of setting up a mystery with plenty of enigmatic twists and turns. You will be suspicious right along with Mia as she begins to wonder what it is about Flicker Island that makes her parents clam up and you’ll be equally surprised as the mystery unravels to reveal what really happened to Tegan Hathaway. Mysterious, realistic and suspenseful, Nightmare Island: False Awakening will keep your mind churning and butterflies in your stomach all the way to the end.
