Fairy Day Games is a children's picture book by Mari Sherkin. Fairies, frogs, gnomes, moles, toads, and imps are dressed up to celebrate the night before the Fairy Games. A young girl looks on as the fairies sing and everyone dances, and she shrinks to their size and joins their festivities. She dances and sings with her forest friends all night and they welcome her into their homes. With friendship and love, they compete in games like a three-legged race, Don't Drop the Egg, and Throw the Ring on the Peg, while toads and frogs fix up their homes to display. The winner of each event stands proudly on a mushroom with a gold medal.
Mari Sherkin has given young readers a glimpse of a fantasy world full of good-natured fun! There are no sore losers in her story, as the winners are supported by their friends. The text is unique, and I loved the way Sherkin matched words like "shrink" and "small" to reflect their presence in the story. It helps young readers as they can see theletters, such as in the word flight, lifted as if they were flying up the page. Sherkin delivers her story in beautiful rhymes and the vibrant colors are sure to capture a child's attention. Caregivers could read the story to open a discussion about good sportsmanship and supporting friends when they participate in competitions. Fairy Day Games is a good selection for young readers who enjoy whimsical stories focusing on friendship and magic.
