Explaining Gravity by Bob Ticer describes gravity as part of our universe in a way that makes it easy for the reader to understand. Existing literature is also referenced with examples of work from Einstein, Hawkins, and The Big Bang Theory. Bob methodically explains his personal philosophy on how our universe came into existence and will hopefully continue to exist. The following subjects are covered: Laws of Motion, Newtonian Mechanics, Kinematics Atoms and Thermodynamics, From Wave Theory to Relativity, Simple Space-Time Relativity, Mass-Energy Dynamics, The Relativity of Gravity, Quantum Origins, Particle and Wave Quantum Physics, Renormalized Quantum Physics, The Relativity of Hubble Cosmology. Sound complicated? Well, it is, but this book helps us to understand all of these theories and more.
When Explaining Gravity first crossed my path, I wondered why on earth I would pick up such a book. However, I have never been more grateful. As a lover of trivia, I decided to add a few nuggets to my collection of information. Explaining Gravity is thoroughly researched and well written, including everything there is to know about the historical development of various theories, natural phenomena, laws of nature, etc. Bob Ticer painstakingly explains everything in enough detail for the reader to understand, although I did have to read some sections twice. I loved the smooth flow of information, basic steps from start to finish. I appreciated the index and a summary of the upcoming chapters at the beginning of the book so that I had an idea of what to expect. An example of what I learned is that matter varies in speed from interacting with light or other matter, whereas light only varies in speed if moving through material media. One of my favorite lines from the book is “whatever existence that we are aware of could be only part of many realities.” I recommend Explaining Gravity to any person who has even a remote interest in how our universe works.
