Sunny Price, on another planet known as Veridian Katje, is the main character of the YA novel Exile by Karen Harris Tully. It is the first book in The Faarian Chronicles Trilogy, which takes Sunny and readers to a totally different planet. Sunny’s father is from Earth, while her mother comes from Macawi. Her dad looked after Sunny while she grew up, found great friends and worked towards becoming an Olympic gymnast. Her dreams are shattered when she finds out that her parents made the agreement that Sunny would spend a year on her mother’s planet once she was old enough. She has no choice and finds herself on a planet full of dangerous birds, a clan of mainly female warriors, and a race called Molinidae. And her mother doesn’t really spend much time with her apart from giving her orders. It all changes when “vampires” are attracted to Sunny’s blood and her mother is framed for the murder of one attacker.
I loved Exile by Karen Harris Tully not only for its interesting plot, but also for the fact that vegans are absolutely normal on that planet, and not ridiculed as a fringe group or people not to be taken seriously. It’s really nice to see that more and more authors reflect the way the world is changing. I wasn’t aware that vegans were part of the book, but was pleasantly surprised. The writing style of the novel is the kind of style that makes you forget about actually reading because it draws you into the world and makes it easy to imagine everything that is going on. There is plenty of conflict between the different characters, and the way characters developed, met for the first time and then developed friendships (or the opposite) really set the tone for the whole trilogy. At the point of writing this review, I have read all three parts because sometimes the first book is great and the rest is disappointing. Fortunately, this is a series that is worth reading from book 1 right to the end. I did so in about one week and felt like the characters turned into my friends during that week. Definitely very enjoyable and I’d recommend it to all fans of YA science fiction mixed with fantasy and some mythology.
