Katie’s not very good in PE class. She can’t dribble a basketball; she can’t skip rope without tangling the rope in her legs. The other students laugh at Katie’s attempts. That is until Katie’s teacher introduces yoga to the students. Now, Katie has something she excels at. While Katie manages to hold every pose that the teacher introduces, the rest of the students quickly lose interest and some even tumble over. Not Katie. Even the other students notice Katie’s ability to hold every pose presented, even the tree pose where she has to balance on one leg. One of the boys says, “Wow, Katie, you are really good at yoga!” And Katie has a good, logical, sound explanation: “Well, everybody’s good at something!”
Susan E. Rose’s picture book story, Everybody’s Good at Something: Yoga Tales from the Gym, is a sweet, feel-good type of story to help young people find their niche and build their own self-confidence. Feeling good about oneself is the core to the benefits of doing yoga. Even the simplest breathing exercises expel negative energy, replacing it with positive vibes. The author shows the reader Katie’s frustrations in PE class and how she suddenly blossoms on the day the teacher introduces yoga. The author cleverly takes the reader through the simplest exercises, explaining the benefits and illustrating how to do each pose. As the exercises become more complicated, the young reader will relate to Katie’s growing confidence. She even admits to feeling good about herself and about the world around her. This is a positive story about finding one’s own niche and excelling in what you do best while introducing some of the benefits of doing yoga to young readers.
