L.K. has been writing for over twenty years. She first began writing children’s books and poetry, moved on to writing music, and is now writing Young Adult and Adult novels. Everlasting is a YA paranormal novel written by L.K. Kuhl. Seventeen-year-old Sophia Bandell makes her way to Charleston to spend her high school vacation with best friend, Mandy Stuart. Socially awkward around men, Sophia is shocked to find that Mandy owns her own home and lives with her fiancé, Matt Cobain. While working on her suntan at the beach, a Frisbee narrowly misses Sophia’s head and lands beside her, closely followed by a black Labrador, Symphony, and the dog’s owner, Tate Forester. After being warned to stay away from Mandy’s parents’ empty bedroom, Sophia enters one night when she hears music playing from within and her senses start to tingle when she can smell Tate’s aftershave. She quickly starts to question her own sanity when she keeps seeing men in black hooded cloaks following her. When Tate also vanishes, Sophia is chased by thunder and lightning each time she approaches the local cemetery. Sophia notices Symphony at the cemetery’s entrance and runs home with her, while being chased by one of the hooded creatures who turns out not to be human after all. As the search for Tate resumes, Sophia starts to question if anything which has happened during her holidays is real or if she has been completely stripped of her sanity.
L.K. Kuhl’s writing skills and imagination are extraordinary. The beginning of Everlasting is an innocent tale of two friends who had not seen each other in four years coming together once more for a holiday, but with each turn of the page, the story starts to become dark, sullen, mysterious and, at times, downright terrifying right through to the shocking climax. Animal control’s policy of euthanizing lost pets after 24 hours had my blood boiling in an emotional tug-of-war. Although so many different things seem to be happening at once, the combination of story lines works well together, and I found Sophia’s positive attitude and determination to be rather invigorating. I very much enjoyed the adrenaline-pumping, edge-of-your-seat thrill of Everlasting. I recommend this book to readers aged 15 years and older who enjoy their romance novels filled with mystery, drama, humor and a massive dose of supernatural intrigue.
