Eunis, a novel by Herbert Heastie, tells the story of Mikael. Mikael is astonishingly normal. He is a middle-aged, working-class, run-of-the-mill guy. We’re introduced to his daily grind, paycheck-to-paycheck lifestyle, and relationship struggles. Yet, Mikael’s life is about to turn on its head, forever. His mundane, normal existence actually takes place in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. What used to be Earth is now the post-nuclear desert of New Sapien. Yet, just across a magical gateway, Earth’s twin realm, Eunis, is waiting. When Mikael accidentally crosses the gateway, his presence marks the release of an ancient evil, and the beginning of a thrilling, action-packed adventure.
Herbert Heastie has written an intriguing and captivating tale. The world, or rather worlds, that he created are unique and fascinating. The concept of the parallel world really intrigued me. Heastie also has a well-rounded cast of characters with unique personalities, voices, and histories. The dialogue between these characters is witty and realistic. All too often, I see authors with cookie-cutter characters, and pretentious, unrealistic dialogue. It’s a refreshing change to see diverse characterization and authentic voices. These elements, combined with a captivating plot, made for an enthralling read. I couldn’t wait to turn each page, excited to see what would come next. I truly enjoyed Heastie’s work, and I am very excited to read more of it in the future. Hopefully, I will get the opportunity to review the next book in this promising series!
