I decided to read Enlightened Public Finance: Fiscal Literacy for Democrats, Independents, Millennials and Collegians by Girard Miller because I have recently become more politically aware. I am a baby boomer and I have two grown kids. Though they are educated and have good jobs, the long-term prospects for their future don’t look too bright. I saw the massive Trump tax-cuts and I wondered to myself, “How can we afford this?” The short answer according to Miller is that we cannot. But he does offer a plan for how we can get back on track and start being more fiscally responsible as a nation and as individual citizens. The first step is to be more aware of what our politicians are doing with our money and our economy. This makes sense to me. I am 60 years old. I probably won’t have to deal with the drastic changes that the climate crisis, the rising national debt, and the rise of China and the yuan signal, but my children certainly will, as will their kids.
The first thing that impressed me about Enlightened Public Finance by Girard Miller is how well organized the book is. From the introduction and chapter by chapter, I could see a plan forming and I could see that it was well thought out and that it made sense. The second thing that impressed me is how well Girard Miller expresses his ideas. He writes in a no-nonsense way that even people like me, who may not have an education that is finance and policy-based, can understand. This is essential if his plan is to have any chance of being carried out on a national level. I hope that eventually happens. For all our sakes. And our children.
