Emy La Hormiga/The Ant by Esmeralda Pérez Cortés is a delightful children’s book that features a traveling ant named Emy who became lost in the woods on the way back to her home. While on her journey she came across a zoo, spread out before her with a collection of different types of animals. Would they take the time to help poor Emy and would she be able to make it home? Esmeralda Pérez Cortés has crafted a story full of bright and larger-than-life characters along with her main protagonist, one of the smallest creatures in the world. Cortés narrates a compassionate story and in doing so provides readers with a lesson in Spanish. The Spanish version of the text appears above the English translation.
Esmeralda Pérez Cortés’ Emy La Hormiga/The Ant is one of those inspirational stories that will draw adults and children alike. The words used are simple enough so that they can be read by most children, although perhaps with the help of an adult to navigate the pronunciation of the Spanish words. The illustrator Alynor Díaz paints a canvas with striking colors that will attract young readers as they turn each page. The creatures themselves have a charming array of personalities that are incorporated in the illustrations, which also reflect the emotions that they exhibit. This book would be an excellent addition to elementary school libraries as well as hospitals, where it might bring comfort to those at an emotional crossroads in their lives.
