After the defeat of Tyrace, Navessa was at peace once again. The emperor, Moroweth Vergana, named his adopted son, Ilruyn, as his successor instead of his birth son. This didn’t go down well with his children, Rufyllys and Petrea, who hated and saw their adopted brother as a usurper. Rufyllys was born with a weak body, was easy going, unassuming, and looked down upon by everyone. His sister, Petrea, was the ever-smiling one who loved to collect secrets. However, beneath these two personas lay formidable and deadly minds. Ilruyn was also a worthy opponent, through and through. Moroweth Vergana has unknowingly drawn the battle lines, and the race for the throne is on. Who will be the emperor? Find your answer in Empire of Jackals by Morgan Cole!
Empire of Jackals is the second installment in The Chrysathamere Trilogy. Morgan created what I’d call “orderly chaos” with this story because it was a madhouse. The book title was truly fitting because it felt like I was consistently pumped with doses of epinephrine. This story was unpredictable, with new twists that I enjoyed. The beautiful thing is that while it’s part of a series, it’s also independent. Morgan gave a wholesome recap of the first book before delving into this story. The writing style was era-appropriate, and the characters developed perfectly. They elicited different emotions from me so that I felt like jumping into the book to fight. Also, whatever inspired the characters’ names, they were unique. Once again, Morgan Cole has wowed me! Well done!
