Empathetic Leadership: 47 Practical Tips for Leading with Kindness, Courage, and Confidence in an Age of Disruption by Michael Brisciana is about leadership that follows a revised version of the golden rule - Dave Kerpen’s “platinum rule”: do unto others as they would like, not as you would because everyone is different. Leading through the service of others, servant leadership, is what the book is about. It includes advice on how to build your team, manage your team, developing a working organization culture, mentoring and more; almost all the habits and sensibilities you will need to be a successful leader. It is packed with 47 tips drawn from old and new HR insights from academia and years of experience, delivered in a very accessible manner and with interesting anecdotes.
If someone were to ask how valuable this book is, I’d ask them how much would they be willing to pay for wisdom borne out of over 25 years of experience. A fortune? The good news is that this book won’t cost you that much in time or money, but the lessons will be as valuable. I can see it being used as a do’s and don’ts Bible for beginners and veterans alike when the need arises. It covers comprehensive ground in an easy to digest manner and I can see this book being used in areas that extend beyond leadership in organizations and businesses. These are maxims worth upholding in our personal lives as well. Empathetic Leadership is a self-help/business book that isn’t afraid to be nuanced when the need arises. Empathetic Leadership is erudite, lean, well written and accessible. Michael Brisciana doesn’t want to bore his readers, be needlessly long or complex, and yet amazingly manages to preserve his intelligence in the process.
