In Emily’s Quills by Tamiko Pettee, we are introduced to a hedgehog who loved to play with the other animals. One day Emily and her animal friends were having all kinds of competitions to see who was the fastest, tallest, and who could swim the best among other things. Soon Emily began to feel self-conscious because she wasn’t sure that she was good at anything her friends could do. A fire started afterward in the forest and all the animals helped to save the squirrel, but she was still very sick. Emily decided she would stay the night with their sick friend to prove she had a special ability. Emily watched the squirrel throughout the night and even saved her from the mean fox who wanted to eat her. Her quills were good for protecting as she soon discovered.
I thought Emily’s Quills was an adorable read with a good message for children. Like Emily, I think it’s very common for children to have thoughts that they aren’t special like others just because someone can do something they can’t. It’s important to let children know that they are special in their own way. Emily was a good character that kids will relate to. The illustrations are beautifully done and fit perfectly with the storyline. They are colorful and imaginative, which I think kids will love. Overall, I think Tamiko Pettee has done a wonderful job with this story and I can’t wait to read what Tamiko comes out with next.
