Author Biography

Lucille's first novel, Like Wine, was a tribute to her mother and getting it into print before she passed was her goal. She considers Elizabeth's Mountain to be her true debut novel. When she was young, walking into a bookstore with its new book smells and feels was more exciting to her than a candy shop. She has lived most of her life in northern New Jersey and now lives in South Carolina with her husband, close to her two daughters and
grandchildren. Lucille loves stories that lift her and gratify her and where she can take a little of the characters inside of her and sometimes see herself in them.

Elizabeth’s Mountain by Lucille Guarino cleverly interweaves Elizabeth's twilight years with the new adult blossoming of her granddaughter Amanda. Commencing with Elizabeth’s ninetieth birthday party, it explores her memories of childhood and the tragic death of her first love, Robbie. A mourning period is followed by an emotional revival through friendship and courtship by her husband, Joseph. Amanda has left an unsatisfying relationship and moved into the house to provide Elizabeth with companionship. The young nurse attends a workplace training where she meets lawyer Jesse Taylor. The development of her relationship is pleasingly paced to match Elizabeth’s reminiscences.

Elizabeth’s Mountain by Lucille Guarino is a thoughtful and poignant novel that fulfills the reader's expectations of women’s literature. I liked that the story had two heroines from different generations. Elizabeth’s memories evoked the glamour and nostalgia of historical literature, while Amanda’s life contained the sparkle of contemporary romance. The two women seemed compatible because of temperament, family ties, and the mutual choice of nursing as their vocation. The house on the mountain formed the perfect background for multigenerational living. I enjoyed the exploration of aging, which was adroitly tempered with the sense that the older heroine, Elizabeth, had remained young at heart. Joseph was a solid and slightly damaged hero, providing the appropriate match for Elizabeth. Jesse was charming and mysterious, creating interest as Amanda’s romantic partner. The style was smooth and the dialogue flowed naturally, creating a relaxing reading experience. Elizabeth’s Mountain by Lucille Guarino presents a variety of interactions with family and friends and reflects the variability of life.

A Tale of Two Romances
Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2024
This novel is an engaging blend of historical and contemporary romance. It recounts the life of a grandmother and her coming of age and finding love in the 1950s while her granddaughter navigates her own path to love in the here and now. Their stories are compelling, and at times, are parallel, while other times, a complete paradox. In each case, love wins in the end

The author slowly and subtly pours life into the characters throughout the beginning of this book that by the time you are two thirds done with it, you are so emotionally attached to each and every one of them that every little move they make feels as though you are right there with them. A can't-put-down tale that I now can't wait to discuss!!

Dual Timelines, One Heartfelt Story
Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2024
At the heart of "Elizabeth’s Mountain" are two women whose lives are separated by time but connected through shared heritage. The novel’s dual timelines provide a vivid contrast between the twilight years of one and the promising future of another.
The first storyline follows Elizabeth, an older woman reflecting on her past as she faces the end of her life’s journey. Her romance, which unfolds against the backdrop of the early 1950s, is tender and bittersweet, illustrating how love can shape and define a life even as it encounters inevitable heartbreak.
The second narrative focuses on her granddaughter, Amanda, who stands on the precipice of a new chapter in her life. Her journey is a tale of self-discovery and renewal, marked by a fresh romance.
"Elizabeth’s Mountain" is more than just a narrative of love and romance. It is a testament to the power of hope and the beauty of finding joy in unexpected places. If you appreciate novels that offer a rich blend of relatable characters and multi-generational romance, then Lucille Guarino's "Elizabeth’s Mountain" is a must-read. Prepare to fall hard for this poignant and enchanting book

Resilience, Fears, Hope, and More
Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2024
This is the life story of two women, a grandmother and a granddaughter. Their relationships, decisions, and desires are carefully detailed and intricately woven together.

The author, Lucille Guarino, blends a historical and a contemporary romance into one narrative. This heartfelt and genuine tale highlights resilience, hope, dreams, and fears, focusing on the dreams of two women in male-dominated eras. Lucille Guarino addresses each woman’s struggle – the grandmother’s anguish over her home on the mountain and the granddaughter’s yearning for a fresh beginning. The satisfying conclusion reveals that men and women can leave a legacy! The characters are well-developed, the narrative flows smoothly, and the plot twists are captivating and unexpected.

The narrator, Deborah Kosnett, delivers an engaging and beguiling performance. Kosnett speaks clearly, and her deliberate pauses and cadence enrich the narrative. She seamlessly slips into each character, effectively bringing them to life. In addition, Kosnett gives each one a rich and intriguing presence.

This is an intriguing book that immerses each listener completely into the narrative. As a team, both Guarino and Kosnett, deliver a delightful audiobook.
