Now in her eighties, Carolyn Osborn had a successful career as an author, and wrote, amongst others, numerous anthologies. In Durations: A Memoir and Personal Essays, she describes her family ties against the background of World War II and the post-war years in Tennessee and later in Texas when her country’s westward movement took place. We also learn about post-war prosperity in Texas. The memoir incorporates family history and a situational discussion of her family’s development and losses. She wrote about conservational initiatives, Celtic mythology, geology, archaeology, anthropology, and traditional American cultural practices, which include ranching, bird and wildlife, and traditional hunting of game.
Her discussions include ecological conservation and evolution as a priority. Being American, she was fortunate enough to travel to other countries, such as Egypt and the Middle East, despite attacks on tourists and other foreigners by militant Islamic fundamentalists. She also visited the British Isles and the Galápagos Islands. Durations: A Memoir and Personal Essays is a reflection of Carolyn Osborn’s travels. Memory clings to certain objects and places where she traveled, telling these stories that are so sharply imprinted in her daily life, feelings, and dreams that it was a pleasure to read. In her interest in the study of generations, she reflects some conscious sense of history. Gazing at the ordinariness of the past, she supports their dignity as a family. This book represents her systematic approach to content by filtering her subject to retain the essence. Carolyn’s writing is impressive and is evidence of her schooling in journalism.
