Don’t Read This Book: A Novel About a Book You Should Not Read is a humorous and exciting work of madcap dashes, weird prophecies, but also powerful social issues, and was penned by author Benjamin Gorman. The action centers around Magdalena Wallace, a Black, Latina lesbian woman who, at first, has no idea that she is the world’s greatest writer. A prophecy centered on Lena tells that she will write a powerful book which ends all of human civilization, and then she finds herself kidnapped and forced to write it. The uniqueness of her voice is her danger, and when she escapes with the deadly manuscript in hand, all hell literally breaks loose to take it from her.
Apocalyptic, fantastical, wry and insightful, author Benjamin Gorman offers up a book that you shouldn’t read, and yet you can’t put down. Longer than the average end of the world novel, this deeply involved and fascinating work provides an extremely well-narrated and well-paced action plot surrounding Magdalena and the supernatural monsters that come out of the woodwork to help or hinder her quest to keep her book unread. But what’s even more enjoyable than the fast-paced and amusing urban fantasy tale is the social issues philosophy that lies behind it, in which Lena’s personal heritage and sexuality are superbly utilized to make her an advocate and a true voice for modernity and its future. Overall, Don’t Read This Book: A Novel About a Book You Should Not Read absolutely must be read.
