Don't Bite the Doctor, by the award-winning Ellen Fannon, is a warm, funny, insightful Christian romance against the backdrop of vets and pets. The main character Jill Bennet is a veterinarian, but sometimes she finds the owners of the pets in need of treatment too. This is a doctor who has treated more than dogs and cats. Her patient list includes birds, rabbits, horses, or just about any other creature you can think of. But she tends to them all with loving care, according to the book of Colossians 3:23. After 40 years of service, she ponders on her early days as a novice animal doctor back in the '80s, when veterinarians were mostly male.
But the real world isn't like school. Jill has to navigate the unexpected, the unpredictable, all with a sense of humor and a strong dose of patience. The humans that bring their pets to her are just as interesting as the pets themselves. She also has coworkers to contend with, and that doesn't always go so well. A particularly bright spot in these new experiences is a blooming relationship with the plumber. Fannon's sense of humor really shines through in this book, and so does her love and respect for animals. The dialogue is crisp and realistic, and the pacing is just right. If you love anecdotes about animals or want inside stories of what a vet's life is like, you will be fascinated and actually educated by this one. I love the natural banter between all of the characters, but especially Jill and Jack (yes, Jack). The book is so entertaining that it flies by all too quickly. For a romance novel set in the world of animals and original characters, treat yourself to Don't Bite the Doctor by the award-winning Ellen Fannon.
