When Dillard was a wee little dragon, his brother was very mean to him, hitting Dillard over the head or throwing water up his nose when he was practicing his fire breathing. Dillard had to always dodge his older brother to keep from getting hurt. One day an older dragon was standing nearby and saw the older brother try to hit Dillard, and of course, Dillard dodged to keep from getting hurt. This older dragon then started calling Dillard ‘Dodger,’ a name that always stayed with him. Dillard hated his nickname.
One day Dodger met up with Oswald, his wise old owl friend. Oswald told Dodger something that made him very happy. Knowing the wisdom of his owl friend, Dodger knew he could believe what he said. Well, what could Oswald tell Dodger to make him so happy? Will his friends keep calling him Dodger, or will he have his real name back again?
I love this cute little dragon story and the lesson it teaches. Though Dodger was sad because his family and friends chose to follow big brother dragon and pick on the little dragon, God used the wise old owl to inform the dragon that He was going to do something special in Dodger's life. I really like that the story ended like it did, because young readers who read this might just think about Dodger the Dragon when they are being picked on and laughed at, especially at school and around other kids. This is a well written book, very attractive with adorable illustrations. The pictures make the story so very sweet and child-like.
