Do You REALLY Believe Him? Understanding How Christianity Betrayed Jesus and His Narrow Path While It Embraced Paul and His Broad Road is a nonfiction religion/philosophy book written by Evedyahni BenAvraham. The author’s biographic information lists him as the Spiritual Guide at K’hal YAH, a congregation of the Original Hebrew People located in Brooklyn, New York. He argues that, while most Christians believe that they are following the precepts of Jesus Christ, in his capacity as the Son of God, Jesus’ teachings had been altered by the Apostles and those who sought to spread Christianity in order to make the religion easier for the heathens or other peoples to follow. He points to a number of instances where Jesus’ teachings indicated that the Torah was to be obeyed above all else. Jesus uses that conviction to refuse Satan’s temptations during his forty days and nights in the wilderness, and the author shows that the lesson Jesus gives from his experiences is just that: “If we want to overcome Satan, we have to know, live, and evoke the words of the Torah.” Evedyahni BenAvraham illustrates how Jesus had conflicts with those who gave the Talmud precedence over the Torah, which cannot be “modified, or annulled...and which will remain authoritative as long as there is a Heaven and an earth.” He argues that following the precepts and teachings of Jesus, the prophet, implies following the Torah to the letter as the word of God.
Evedyahni BenAvraham’s nonfiction religion/philosophy book, Do You REALLY Believe Him?, is a fascinating look at biblical interpretation which charts the changes that Christians made to Jesus’ teachings and the road believers must take to follow Jesus’ true words. The author’s arguments are clearly and distinctly set out, and supporting biblical references are given to help the reader’s understanding, whether he is familiar with the Bible or not. I was particularly interested in his in-depth look at the Torah and his discussion on how early Christians changed Jesus’ teachings to make spreading the faith more easily accomplished. His arguments that the disciples dispensed with the rules on circumcision and food restrictions and put faith in the place of obedience to the Torah are well-made and convincing. This is a well-written text that uses Jesus’ words to illustrate the cogent points being made, and at no point did I feel that the author was proselytizing or promoting his faith. I found much within his work to think about and am pleased to have had the opportunity to read this book. Do You REALLY Believe Him? Understanding How Christianity Betrayed Jesus and His Narrow Path While It Embraced Paul and His Broad Road is most highly recommended.
