Dispense-sation: A Pharmacist’s Rx For A Laugh by Christopher Holl is a collection of jokes that have been slightly ‘tweaked’ to relate to the lot that is the ‘Pharmacist’. Some are well known, others not so much. Some have illustrations and other are narrated. But the jokes are also interspersed with anecdotes (like the donut joke – I’ll eat the donut, you can have the hole) aimed to laugh not specifically at – but with – pharmacists. What’s it like to be a pharmacist, or as the book says, you know you’re a pharmacist when… Of course, it’s all done in good humour and all the jokes are family friendly so there is nothing to cause offence. The addition of ‘scientific’ jokes works really well and exploring the different aspects that encompass a pharmacist’s work are skilfully woven into the book.
This book had me laughing, not just here and there, but on nearly every page. The anecdotes are funny and witty and nicely broken up with cartoons and then a few facts that all bind together nicely to make a great book that will go well with a nice cuppa and cookie. The author, Christopher Holl, has done a clever job in compiling these jokes and anecdotes and I have a feeling his character has come out in this book. This is a great book for pharmacists everywhere, but also for anyone that knows one, or even if you occasionally go into a pharmacy. I guarantee you will never look at the pharmacist in the same way again.
