“Never think that war, no matter how necessary, nor how justified, is not a crime.” -- Ernest Hemingway. Die Liste: Revenge on the Black Sun is an intriguing novel by Tom Gauthier. WW11 has ended, but Amos Mead, a former Marine and OSS agent, constantly relives the memories. A military friend, Harmon Wentmore, requests his help in a dangerous, secret CIA mission. Amos re-enacts the thrills of war when he goes in search of a serial assassin who is executing Nazi war criminals brought to the United States by the government for a project. His wife, Brigit, a psychologist, develops a case profile that could help identify the killer and save the lives of the war criminals. There are, however, top-ranking government officials who are willing to do anything to keep their names out of the scandal that is no longer easy to contain.
“Only the dead have seen the end of war.” Die Liste: Revenge on the Black Sun is definitely intriguing and absorbing. Tom Gauthier's writing is a wonderful combination of compassion, nostalgia, empathy, and espionage with a dash of humor. This is seen in the well-developed characters and numerous descriptive settings in the story. The ending was a bit unexpected and the twists were great. Brigit is one of my favorite characters and I can see why she and Amos make a great couple. I always have a deep admiration for the brave men and women in the Armed Forces who have to risk their lives to defend their countries and the author gave great insight into activities that soldiers often do. Die Liste is recommended.
