In Detective Natty and Doggy Dale Follow the Clues, Deborah Hunt relates four short mysteries for children. Detective Natty is an elementary-grade sleuth who solves mysteries with the help of the ghost of her great-grandparents' dog, Dale. Her famous great-grandparents were known for solving mysteries while they ran Darnell Investigations, and they passed on their love for detective work to Natty. Natty and Doggy Dale solve four mysteries for their classmates during one school day, helping them locate a backpack, lunchbox, saxophone, and collectible button book. Several illustrations by Ashley Heyns accompany the text, and additional information about a historical female and male detective ends the book.
Deborah Hunt and Ashley Heyns bring Detective Natty and Doggy Dale Follow the Clues alive with wonderful short stories and engaging drawings. Children will love the ties of friendship throughout the story, from the bond Natty shares with Dale to the connection the duo has with the other children at the school. The stories don't end with solving the mystery. Hunt allows her readers to draw their own conclusions before she reveals the methods Detective Natty and Doggy Dale applied to solve each case. Caregivers who read the book aloud may use the opportunity to help children with problem-solving skills. The cases are different, but they reflect real problems children may encounter daily as they misplace their belongings. Detective Natty and Doggy Dale Follow the Clues is a fun selection for children who enjoy mysteries with human and animal sleuths.
