Detective Death by Darius Ebrahimi is a truly original mystery that is humorous, clever, and fun. Zarik was once worshiped as a god but is now viewed as a demon to be summoned. He found himself with newfound freedom until he was drawn into a game of cat and mouse with someone from his past. Detective Scarlett Wolfe enters his life, seeking his help to solve mystifying cases. Assisting Scarlett creates an opportunity for Zarik to find a path to redemption for previous mistakes but he can’t help wondering if a death god can truly save the day.

The story begins with an incredible opening line that immediately establishes Zarik’s voice and captures your interest. The plot is unique, exploring the journey of a god that has gone from being worshiped to being invoked as a weapon. The story follows Zarik years after this, no longer with his face on temples and rewriting history books now that he’s not viewed as a deity. The world is zany and supernatural where mythology comes to life but Zarik’s journey grounds the story and creates a connection with him. His ability is compared to that of Midas, only instead of turning things to gold Zarik causes people to age with a single touch. This ability weighs on him and disconnects him from others as one touch could kill someone he cares about. Scarlett Wolfe is the perfect character to take Zarik on a new path.

Darius Ebrahimi draws upon elements of Persian, Greek, and Egyptian mythology to create an unusual setting. Several instances of magic occur that are breathtaking, humorous, and examples of the wonder that Ebrahimi has given to this world. Humor is derived through Zarik’s voice, delightful writing, and the dynamics between the characters such as Zarik and Amar’s bickering. Ebrahimi incorporates zaniness into the writing with humor and the cases that feature an accidental serial killer, virtual reality, and even the center of the world. Detective Death is instantly charming with great use of voice paired with humor, mythology, mystery, and well-rounded characters.
