Desiree, The Music of My Soul by Peggy Race is a solid testament to the healing powers of our four-legged friends and how they serve as our bridge to new perspectives and self-discovery. This memoir is a dog lover’s treat, as it captures the joys of having a canine at home. If you write letters to your dog in honor of her memory as this author does, you are assured that a canine is definitely waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge. Although she grew up on a farm in Wisconsin where Race spent her early years taking care of farm animals, it was only during her adult years that she had her first dog. She rescued Desiree, a Hurricane Katrina dog whose bobbed tail danced its way into her heart. What makes Desiree’s role in this memoir significant is that she became a supportive crew member in Race’s voyage to navigate the turbulent sea of life that included heartbreak in relationships.
Desiree could never have come at a more opportune time in Peggy Race’s life, at a moment when she was trying to overcome her grief over the death of her husband, Terry. This is a significant episode that makes this memoir pulsate with touching moments as Race becomes curious about the Australian shepherd mix that she has rescued and manages to trace Desiree’s first owner. Peggy Race has a natural tendency to wax poetic to describe her emotional state, and she has a facility for figurative language that she applies with ease. The sentimental tone in her prose might sound a bit much for some, but note that it is this same passionate telling that makes this memoir brim with life. If your life has been touched by a dog or a cat in one way or another, you’ll find a kindred spirit in Desiree, the Music of My Soul.
