A man dies at a Halloween Ball, and the only witnesses are a small boy and a large dog in the sleuth mystery Death By Chance: A Josiah Reynolds Mystery 16 by Abigail Keam. During the Farmer's Market, Josiah Reynolds watches two men attack Rodney Hiller, one of her long-time friends, while another man captures the fight on camera. A little while later, while catering for the Civil War event, Josiah observes a shooting that doesn't coincide with the outlined program, and Rodney is the victim. An ambulance races Rodney to the hospital, but luckily, his injuries are minor. The next night, at the Halloween Ball, Josiah is chasing her dog through the corn maze when she stumbles over a dead body. Before she can get a good look, someone dressed as the Grim Reaper chases her from the Maze. Is there someone hiding behind the scenes?
Death By Chance by Abigail Keam is an entertaining sequel in a charming cozy mystery series. The story is intriguing, the plot suspenseful, and the characters relatable. With multiple twists and turns, the story is captivating from the first page until the last, keeping the reader guessing until the exciting finale. The characters are quirky and eccentric, giving the series an original flavor. Even though this book is the sixteenth installment in a series, it does very well as a standalone. The characters and their backstories are slowly integrated into the storyline, melding beautifully with the current adventure. It is a delightful mystery that will charm Agatha Christie's Miss Marple fans and everyone else who enjoys cozy mysteries starring nosy middle-aged female amateur sleuths who are always one step ahead of the police.
