Dear Mama: An Immigrant’s Secret Cry is a collection of poems that share with us Shailja Sharma’s innermost feelings. In this book, we see that circumstances and time make us change, but the most drastic are the ones that give us strength. There are situations where we have to leave everything behind, including home, culture, and all that we know. The subject of immigration is sensitive and complex. Here we see perspectives from both the side of reality and of poetic art. The author speaks of memories, places, and objects in a very special way. She expresses what is deep in the heart of an immigrant. At the same time, she gives a message of hope, because being an immigrant is complicated; it requires overcoming a lot of nostalgia and coming to an acceptance of how complex life can be.
Shailja Sharma’s poetry is unique and realistic. She focuses on her experiences and does so in a very harmonious way. Her analogies are clear and convey strong emotions. It makes one reflect on many situations and helps us to appreciate all that we have. She teaches us to give true value to things and experiences. I loved this book. Dear Mama reminds us that life is a fight against time, that what is important is what our hearts transmit and that is why we must accept every decision we make with pride. Life is an endless journey, it is complicated, but it is part of an adventure full of all kinds of experiences.
