Pretty, parky Kari Dulin had met and fell in love with Matt Bauer, who had overcome a troubled childhood and was on his way to becoming a Baptist minister. They married and Kari gave birth to two little girls, Kensi and Kassidy. Kassidy had suffered from a brain tumor and was slowly recovering when she died one night. Kari grieved for the loss of her daughter but Matt seemed unmoved. They move from one Baptist church to another in their home state of Texas and even though Matt is accused of improper conduct with girls and women in his ministries, Kari always stands up for Matt. A third daughter, Grace, is born and Kari loves caring for her as she teaches third grade in the local school near Matt's Crossroads church. Kari suspects Matt of having an affair with the music minister's daughter, Vanessa Bulls, but cheers on her daughters at their sporting events and writes a prayer for protection in her Bible. Then, on Friday, April 7, 2006, Kari Bauer was found dead in her bedroom and it was declared a suicide and an empty bottle of Unisom and a typed farewell letter were found nearby. Kari's parents knew perfectly well that their daughter's death was no suicide.
"Deadly Little Secrets" is a well-written true account by author Kathryn Casey of how the grieving parents of Kari Bauer could not accept the sloppy account of their daughter's death. Too many things did not make sense including the facts that Matt Bauer never once showed any sadness at losing his wife and that the drugs in Kari's system, found only at Dulin's insistence, could not have killed their daughter. Author Casey takes the reader step by step through the fascinating details of this case that went on for months as Kari's parents and her aunts would not and could not accept an inaccurate verdict. "Deadly Little Secrets" will keep readers clamoring for more books by Kathryn Casey.
