Day of the Tiger (A Carlos McCrary Novel, Volume 5) is a mystery/sleuth by Dallas Gorham. Al Rice is a drunk gambler who owes loan shark, Monster Mofett, money he can’t repay. Monster tortures him and Al asks his wealthy friend, Tank Tyler, for help. Tank hires Carlos McCrary, a P.I., to protect Al, who has disappeared, but Al’s mother, Doraleen, is in danger when Teddy, Monster’s heartless thug, pays her a visit. Monster’s plans for Al change after learning of Tank’s wealth and the stakes become higher and more dangerous. Al’s obsession with a stripper might be the link to his problems, but Carlos’s search for her isn’t easy since she frequently changes nightclubs. The deeper Carlos digs into Monster’s organization, the shadier it becomes and deadlier too.
“It is better to live for one day as a tiger than to live for a thousand years as a sheep.” – Tibetan Proverb. This proverb aptly applies to Al Rice’s weak character. Dallas Gorham gives a realistic account of how people’s lives can change due to unforeseen circumstances and they become addicted to drugs and other negative attractions. The story is moderately paced with good dialogue and interesting characters and events. Carlos McCrary is a smart, skilled private investigator with a sense of humour. I haven’t read other books by this author, but am curious to know more about Carlos and what makes him such a good detective in this mystery series. I like the cover and recommend this book.
