Dark Creatures: The Grand Game is book two of Tim Ahrens’ addictive Dark Creatures series. Having been banished to the void the Gods now seek entertainment with what little power they have by hosting the last man standing game called Dark Creatures. Each of the six participants has a pawn, and their charges have their own slaves/pawns as well in this game. The Gods' playthings will have to tread carefully as their own world is undergoing changes and their slaves in Dark Creatures have their own shares of problems to contend with. Regardless of the world or dimension, all are pawns in the Gods' grand game and even the Gods know not how this unprecedented version of their game will turn out. Who of the six will be the victor?
Dark Creatures: The Grand Game was a unique and fun book to read. Being an avid gamer myself made this book even more enjoyable as it has some RPG elements in it. The plot also had me hooked as it had a lot going on. There was a lot to sink my teeth into but I never felt overwhelmed by everything. Tim Ahrens' characters were a highlight as well and the servants of the Gods' pawns in the Dark Creatures’ world were my favorite. They were vastly different both in terms of ability and personality. My favorite of the bunch was the Lich (kinda like an undead dark mage or druid) Malcolm Masterson. His lines were pretty cool as were his abilities. All in all, I had a great time reading this book. Fans of the series and newcomers alike are sure to enjoy this book by Tim Ahrens.
