Dancing with David by Siegfried Johnson is a fact-based historical fiction novel that puts an astounding spin on an old messianic tale. The story begins at the Mount of Olives, East of Jerusalem in the year 2022. Pastor Michael Tabash is elated at his proclamation that the newly-born Regina Malka Maris-Aaronson, who is resting less than a mile away at Augusta Victoria Hospital, is now entering the 13th hour of her miraculous life—she is believed to be the promised daughter of King David and his Star of the Sea. Meanwhile, less than a year ago, a Hebrew University professor and archaeologist discovered a 3,000-year-old stone tablet containing a psalm by King David dedicated to an unknown female referred to as Kochav Hayam or the Star of the Sea. It also talks about the existence of a seventh tablet that can only be discovered by this Kochav Hayam. Stella Maris, the professor’s student, will help to unlock the mystery as she tells of having a vision of dancing with King David.
Siegfried Johnson has an exemplary storytelling instinct that will arouse the interest of readers whether or not they are Bible readers. He has a keen sense of narration, history, and characterization, and he manages an intelligent balance between the story of David and the political and social context in which he puts his contemporary take. You can feel the pervasive sense of the past and present. At the same time, he manages to sustain the intrinsic dramatic and historical value that eludes some historical fiction inspired by biblical material. Dancing with David is a tale with a revolutionary idea and uncompromising taste. It takes its strength from a sense of humanity and the impact of revelations. I highly recommend this story for its mystifying and strong plot and for its impressionable characters.
