Confessions of a Good Kid by William Fogg is a hilarious adventure of a carefree, delightful childhood and the thrills of early youth. It is an autobiography that takes readers on a rollicking ride with the author through his mischief and adventures in the company of like-minded kids as they engage in numerous escapades poised to disrupt the authority of the adults — teachers, coaches and parents. Set against the backdrop of middle class society at a time when smartphones were nonexistent and when video games were a thing of the future, this narrative will draw readers into an experience of nostalgia for the children they once were. It is delightfully engaging, filled with adventure and laughter.

I was hooked from the very first sentences of the story, sentences that give insight into the personality of the author and that perplex the reader. I wanted to know more about this character when I read the opening: “When I was a baby, I swallowed a cigarette butt. My parents called the doctor, and were told to have me drink warm salt water to induce vomiting. They anticipated a struggle, but I surprised them by ingesting the water without resistance. I further surprised them by refusing to vomit.” And the humor begins there. The readers know they are not dealing with a normal character — at least, not by our contemporary normal standards. What kid swallows a cigarette butt today?

The promise the reader receives in the opening pages of this narrative is fulfilled beyond expectations. The voice is compelling, the prose beautiful, with unique turns of phrase, and diction that reflects the age of the protagonist and the world he grew up in. Confessions of a Good Kid will come across to most readers as a welcome moment of healthy laughter. The folly, the unfettered urge for adventure, and the sheer fun of it rubs off on the reader and leaves him laughing uncontrollably.

A delightful romp through memory lane. As a young girl at that time, I always wondered what " bad" things our brethren were up to and Bill's book provides us with the details and the candor of his mischievous childhood. The author's detailed recollections are remarkable, to say the least,
and Bill vividly captures the simple glory of the 50s and 60s. Easy reading and you'll probably find yourself laughing, cringing and smiling throughout his journey into his teenage years. Just plain fun to read.
