Code Black by Tina Moss is set in a futuristic North American federation called NAU, where three paranormal sub-species have come out of the shadows to claim citizenship alongside humans. When a human family is gruesomely murdered, Serafina Benenati is determined to solve the case. PCD special agent Talon Rede is all that stands between her and a Pulitzer. Sera’s investigation hits a dead end until she becomes the prime witness. After Sera gets attacked by the phage, the PCD realize that all the murders are connected. Sera is the common denominator. Talon is determined to protect Sera from danger and he fights his strong attraction to her. As more secrets unravel, Sera’s true heritage is revealed. Talon’s PCD team is divided when they discover that one of their own may be working with the enemy.
Tina Moss’ writing is fast-paced and keeps you on your toes. This paranormal series is totally kick-ass. Talon’s team is made up of multi-faceted characters who added to the richness of the story. I loved the interaction in the team and how they evolved from mistrusting the Veritas to making them their unofficial allies. I especially liked the myth surrounding the origins of the paranormal sub-species. I really felt sorry for the phage puppets who were being used to kill people. It is one of the instances where Code Black shows that real life isn’t one happy ride after another. All in all, I would love to see where this series is going. This is definitely a must-read novel.
